Many tourists only experience the lush, volcanic panoramas of West Java (Jawa Barat) through the murky window of a lumbering bus or trains, but this dramatic, diverse region has plenty to detain the inquisitive traveller who enjoys breaking away from the standard Java traveller circuit. Historically, it’s known as Sunda, and its people and language are Sundanese.
West Java stretches from the remote islands of the Ujung Kulon National Park (last Javan home of the one-horned rhino) in the west to the sweeping beaches of Pangandaran in the east.
Most travellers from overseas fly to Jakarta and continue their journey from there on. For me jakarta is fun to stay for 2/3 days max. to get over the jetlag, get used to the tropical climate.
In general i really try to avoid densed populated areas but this is mission impossible in Jakarta. If you have certain objects you would like to visit i recommend to look for a hotel nearby those locations because the traffic jams overthere (macet) are from another level. If you are on a budget and/or into a little bit more adventure, download the GOJEK app and order a ride. This is also probaly the fastest and cheapest way to navigate to Jakarta traffic.

If you are a coffeebeen lover i highly recommend you to visit Tanamera coffee in Thamrin City. I have been to other barista café’s in Jakarata, but this is the best one. 42 K for a cappucion. Travelling over Java can be done by train or car, i have done both but i prefer to travel by car including driver you just see more that way. There are multiple transport services available with or without english speaking driver. After a few day’s im off to West Java’s coast. Expect some stunning landscapes, lots en lots of fruit, fresh fish and yes excellent Sundanese food. This time i ended up 20 miles or so of Pangandaran and a local guy pointed out some highlights of the region. Definitely will return here and highly recommended for the unspoiled traveller.
